Caliginous Coppice

With mountains and rivers surrounding this small forest, wind can be pretty nasty. It whips through the seemingly dead trees, bringing an eerie constant ringing to your ears. Thankfully, at day break and nightfall, the wind comes to a mere whimper, and this is when the very limited prey is most plentiful. The trees here are barren and some are even charred. There is little vegetation and it barely ever grows because of the lack of nutrients in the soil. This area remains as a reminder that even nature cannot be totally perfect, it shows what destruction can lead to.

"Kauai, look at me," was the words strung out from her mother's mouth, her eyes in a state of panic as she had been pacing around for quite some time now. Today was a day of terror and sadness, this day was a day of mourning. Kauai was just 4 months old, being the small pup she was, she honestly didn't know what to do or say. Her eyes were wondering around her surroundings, generally worried about her mother.

Her mother was found, surrounded by blood along with the other members of her family pack. Her mother was in a state of shock, little to say, seeing her loved one laying there in her own puddle of blood. Kauai didn't know what to do, so she just sat there, tears in her eyes. Right then and there, she had found out what true sadness really felt like, and was afraid to commit to another relationship ever again.

She could see light. Kauai could finally see light. After months of darkness, it was here. She was over-joyed, to say the least. Her heart was pounding as she looked around; trees, that's all she could see. Miles and miles, it was filled with lush, green trees. She started to run, a full speed sprint. Her tongue was lolling out of her mouth while her long coat was blowing back with force of the wind as she ran. She was excited, there was no other wolves around or to be seen.

She slowed down to a trotting pace, taking time to lather herself with beauty of the scenery. Her heart was now calm and serene as she took a moment to lay down in the soft grass; small bugs had flew up into the air as she did so, a small, lop-sided grin on her face. She was content, happy in this large range of trees and bushes and shrubs. Her tail had also calmed down, also.

She felt free, she felt...alive again.

Ronin had been exploring the vast and beautiful landscape for a couple of hours now in search of prey, only to no avail. His lack of tracking and hunting skills weren't exactly helping either, and after having no food for almost a month he was starting to grow weak and exhausted. Ronin raised his ginger coloured ears in alarm, only to chuckle quietly to himself when he realized it was just his stomach growing, and he paused in his walk to stop and sniff the air again for food. There was still no recent scents of prey, however, there was the scent of another wolf. The male's golden eyes widened in alarm, and he raised his hackles, his muscles tensing and his tri-coloured fur fluffing up. From the scent, it seemed like the other wolf was on there own. He thought about the situation. They could have food, though on the other paw they could also be aggressive and attack him, and if they were well fed and healthy, it'd be easy for them to kill him... There was another rumble from his stomach. He however was beginning to grow desperate for food. Ronin sighed quietly, and began to trot towards the smell. When he approached, he was surprised to see a female - not much younger than him - happily laying in the grass, a grin on her features. It seemed like she was examining the pretty terrain around them. As if to make his presence known, he coughed loudly, and stood up straight, his tail slightly curled, and chest puffed out slightly. Then, reluctantly, "Excuse me?" He begun, opening and closing his lightly coloured jaws. "Ugh... can't believe I'm asking this..." He muttered grumpily to himself, furrowing his brows, and curling his nose up. "...Do you - by any chance - have any spare food I could have?" He asked, impatiently tapping a paw, and staring at the strange she-wolf.

(He's speaking to Kauai, btw, and sorry for the terrible post.)

The female had heard various noises as she study her surroundings. Quite pleasant, it was. The sound of trees ruffling in the bees and birds chirping. Unknown to the presence of anything else, she had heard a cough. That wasn't normal. Did trees cough? Nope. It had to be another wolf. She had turned around, and to her surprise, there was a wolf, surprisingly a male one to be exact. "...Do you - by any chance - have any spare food I could have?" was what the male asked. Her head shook subconsciously. "No," she replied with a small frown, "I am truly sorry though. Maybe if you looked into some small streams or ponds around here you'd be able to find some small fish, or crayfish." she then replied, her frown turning into a small smile. She had lifted herself up onto her front legs, resting in a sitting position. "My name is Kauai," she said with a dip of her head," quite and interesting way we got to meet here." she then said as a small smile appeared on her maw.

Ronin sighed quietly to himself. He wasn't surprised by the response - it was unlikely that she would have some food. He turned towards a small stream nearby, and slowly walked towards it, his ears raised, listening to the tricoloured she wolf speak. "Nice to meet you Kauai," He answered, now sitting by the water, his brows furrowed with concentration, and his tail twitching ever so slightly. "My name is... Ronin." He continued to stare down into the water, confused, and unsure of what to do. He then remembered what he had seen a huntress in his clan do when fishing. When there was movement - a medium sized fish swimming in the water in front of his paws - he desperately snapped his jaws and tried to grab a hold of the fish, only for it to splash back into the stream. Ronin growled and angrily smashed his paw into the surface of the water. He could do it himself. He wouldn't ask for help. The heir of a clan didn't ask for help - or rather, the previous heir of a clan. Another snarl escaped his muzzle at the thought of how he had been exiled, and he wrinkled his nose. Why did everything have to be so difficult.
